Described as “electrifying...flawless freshness” (Süddeutsche Zeitung), Australian cellist Benett Tsai came to attention as a top prizewinner at the 2022 Grand Prix Emanuel Feuermann in Berlin. In 2023, he joined the roster of Young Concert Artists upon winning the YCA Susan Wadsworth International Auditions in New York, where he was also awarded The Stern Young Artist Award from the Linda & Isaac Stern Foundation. He has since been named a VC Artist on The Violin Channel, and his recent New York recital was listed as one of the best debuts of 2024 by New York Classical Review.
As a soloist, Benett has performed with orchestras such as the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, Sinfonia Lahti, and Australian Chamber Orchestra Academy, and appeared in recitals at major venues including The Kennedy Center, Shanghai Oriental Arts Center, and City Recital Hall in Sydney. Highlights of the 2024/25 season include collaborations with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Maryland Symphony Orchestra, and an appearance with Emanuel Ax at Jazz at Lincoln Center. Notably, he was featured in the film, The Way Forward, where he performed with Jean-Yves Thibaudet.
Born in 2003, Benett began cello studies at the age of five under the guidance of his uncle, Thomas Tsai. He currently studies with Clive Greensmith at The Colburn School in Los Angeles, and is mentored by Ralph Kirshbaum and Steven Isserlis.
Benett plays on a 1719 Giuseppe Guarneri 'filius Andreae' cello, on loan to him from a generous benefactor.
